Paramore - Careful

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5howHv3F54 (Won't let me access the embed code again).
  • 'Careful' was taken from their 3rd studio album ('Brand new eyes') it was released in July 2010 and it is their 11th single that they have delivered.
  • The video features a more personal side to the band, featuring them in places such as the studio, at live gigs, on photo shoots, signings, on tour and also backstage.
  • According to wikipedia; "It was announced on the official Paramore fanclub that a video containing live footage of the song would be released...it contains performances of the song in many concerts throughout 2009 and includes video clips from various tours and performances".
  • The video uses just very simple editing with straight cuts and fast zooms. No particular special effects are used to keep it simplistic however some parts of the video are in black and white to make it a little more interesting to watch.

Example - Watch The Sun Come Up

  • Example  is a 28 year old singer/ rapper from Fulham, UK, and he is currently signed to Data Records
  • He produces mainly pop, electro and hip/hop music but most of his songs are different and he recently said that he wanted each of his albums to have different sounds to them.
  • The video starts with him in a bed with a girl but then it appears that he was just imagining it. Throughout the video it switches between him with and without the girl. My interpretation of the video is that she's a holiday romance and he's trying to decide whether/ how much he likes her.
  • It's set in lots of different locations such as various city streets, a bedroom, a beach and a club.
  • This particular music video uses a cartoon effect where is takes what's on screen and it's put into a drawn format and throughout the video it switches between this cartoon style and just the normal lens. I think it's a really clever device and definitely adds another depth to the video and helps it to stand out and be more interesting for people to watch.
  • I think they might of used this effect because it helps to portray whether what he's doing and thinking is real or whether it's too good to be true and won't last for very long.

Magnetic Man - I Need Air

  • They perform using 3 computers to create their unique electronic sounds.
  • They have been active and working together since 2007 and in February of 2010 they signed to Columbia Records
  • This is their first and latest single and it was released in late July and in October they are releasing their self titled debut album.
  • The main ideology and thoughts behind this video is the performance aspect. The song doesn't have any specific story behind it and there isn't many lyrics so there is a wide range of options to choose from for the video.
  • The video is set in a big club with lots of people dancing to the music.
  • There is lots of flashing lights used but you can't tell whether these have been added on top during editing or they were in the club when they filmed the video.
  • The footage has has had a few effects added during editing such as slow-motion blurred exposure.
  • This particular music video is a little strange as it doesn't really show the artists during the video.

The King Blues - Save The World Get The Girl

See the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rs8ZSlJO34Q (for some reason youtube won't give me the embed code).

  • The King Blues  are a protest band that produce fused ska, folk rock, and punk to create a unique sound.
  • Save the world get the girl is their 6th single which they released in 2009. It's the tittle track to their second album.
  • The video features the band on the road and it's almost documentary style showing what they get up to as a band such as performing at gigs, back stage, on the road, at protests and there are some shots of the band members almost like a photo shoot.
  • The tittles and a few important lyrics are shown on screen using a graffiti effect (that fits in with the style of the band) where the words are sprayed on.
  • Personally i don't think the video has much to do with what the songs about and they have used this opportunity to showcase what the band get up to and maybe a more personal and deeper look at the band.
  • Simple editing has been used within the video with straight cuts and most of the footage has probably bee recorded by the band.
  • At different  points during the video there has been a filter effect used on the camera lens.

Kele - Everything you wanted

  • Kele Okereke  (28) is generally known for being in the alternative rock band Bloc Party however he is currently working having a break and working on some solo material as a project at the moment and in June 2010 he released his first solo album. He plans to go back to Bloc Party but at the moment he wants to showcase some of his different styles.
  • The video begins with Kele crossing a road then he keeps walking forward, the camera follows his moves in a tracking shot. During this it moves from a long shot to a medium shot. Shot reverse shot is used to show what Kele can see and it also gives the audience a better view.
  • During the chorus the mood of the video totally changes, flashing lights, shots of the sea and various fast paced shots of him are used in a montage. These scenes change to fit in time with the music.
  • The rest of the video features Kele walking around the streets of New York.
  • It's a very deep song and you can tell this from the lyrics that he wrote himself, he also  puts lots of effort and emotion into the singing and the video (he even sheds a tear at one moment) the video makes you feel empathy and sympathy for him.
  • You can tell that the song is personal to him and he's written it from his own experiences because it's just him on his own that's acting in the video and hasn't got                                       someone else to do it for him.

Envy - Set Yourself On Fire

  • Envy (Nicola Varley) is a 23 year old grime, electro and hip-hop rapper/ mc from Manchester, UK.
  • She is signed to the independent record label StopStart Records and is quickly becoming more and more popular, definitely one to watch for the future.
  • The Video begins with her name in a logo form that also appears on most of her CD covers.
  • It then cuts to a shot where she is waking up and has  a steady-cam attached to her so it follows and imitates her movement. This is used for most of the video.

  • Next a fuzzy transition is used to bring us into the next location in the video which is a high street walking along and miming to the music.
  • The rest of the video consists of Envy being in lots of other locations such as a cafe, restaurant, a cab, a lift, a hallway, and in the recording studio.
  • When it reaches the chorus the video changes substantially using fast moving images and probably a green screen is used. The images in the background are of Envy and they move as the music changes.
  • After the chorus it goes back to Envy being in various locations with the steady-cam.
  • During the video lots of fast paced editing is used cutting from different locations.
  • The song is about not just expecting to be amazing and great and successful as if by magic but you actually have to work and 'set yourself on fire' to get somewhere and make things happen.
  • The video ends with some tittle's on the screen. It's a quote from Arnold H. Glasgow. "Success isn't a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire."

Lady Sovereign - So Human

  • Lady Sovereign (Louise Harman 24) is a British rapper and grime artist. that dropped out of school at the age of 15 and since then has come a very long way.
  • 'So Human' is her 9th single and it was released in 2009
  • The video begins with Lady Sovereign  standing in front of a board as if she is in a photo shoot, posing.
  • Then it cuts to her being interviewed in front of a board with lots of logo’s on it
  • Next there is a  close up of the interviewer and the artist, while Sov is being interviewed she is singing along to the words of the song like it’s part of the interview
  • She then trips up someone in  dress and heels that’s walking down the red carpet past her and she also grabs a photographers camera and throws it
  • It then cuts to a montage where she is on the front cover of different magazines and it goes back to this quite a few times throughout the rest of the video
  • Next she is laid on a psychiatrists sofa talking to them but singing along to the words in the song
  • In the final part of the video it cuts back to the photo shoot but then Sov turns it into a party scene with loads of extra’s and she starts dancing with them.

  • Mostly fast paced editing is used during the video with the transitions between scenes moving in time with the music but it’s mainly just straight cuts are used.

Master Shortie - Dead End

    • The music video is mostly located in a club setting with lots of colorful lights and dancing people however he’s also stood in front of a graffiti’d wall singing along while the guitarist plays along in the background a flat is also used as another location. Cross cutting is used to swtich between the different locations throughout the music videos
    • A green screen is used in part of the video, it shows lots of very fast moving lights and Master Shortie is just stood there singing along to the words, in these scenes lots of very close ups are used of his face.
    • Fast paced editing is used throughout the video, most transitions are just straight cuts and they all fit in with the music.
    •  There is also quite a few shots of the girl that he wants, during the video he walks around the club looking for her.
    • Mainly close up’s, medium shots and long shots are used along with lots of crowd scenes inside the club/ party. Overhead shots are used to follow Master Shortie around the club tracking his moves.
    • The song and video are mainly about him out at a party and he wants a girl that he see’s however he has a girl already at home so there’s no point and it’s a ‘dead end’.
